Embark on a true Himalayan odyssey with Royal Orchid Treks & Expedition on Mount Kangchenjunga (8,586 m) , the world’s third-highest peak and Nepal’s second-highest giant. Rising between Nepal and India in the remote eastern Himalayas, Kangchenjunga is legendary for its untouched beauty, steep faces, and deep spiritual significance to the local communities who regard it as a sacred mountain.
The Southwest Face Route is one of the most demanding and rewarding 8,000-meter climbs. This route leads through vast glaciers, sustained ice slopes, technical mixed sections, and exposed ridgelines, offering an authentic high-altitude experience for skilled alpinists. The approach is long and remote, the weather notoriously unpredictable, and the climbing exceptionally sustained, making Kangchenjunga a true test of endurance, precision, and mountaineering judgment.
With Royal Orchid Treks, every detail of the journey is handled with care and expertise. From complete permit arrangements to high-altitude logistics, safety planning, and acclimatization strategy, our veteran Sherpa guides lead the expedition with deep mountain knowledge and respect. A traditional Puja ceremony at Base Camp marks the spiritual beginning of the climb, honoring Sherpa culture and seeking blessings for a safe ascent.
This expedition is ideal for experienced mountaineers with prior ascents above 7,000 meters, seeking a challenging and less-commercialized 8,000-meter peak. We keep our teams small to provide personalized guidance, strong safety standards, and a meaningful expedition experience that blends adventure, culture, and professionalism at the highest level.
Set on the Yalung Glacier, Kangchenjunga Base Camp is remote, peaceful, and surrounded by towering ice walls. This is your home for several weeks, equipped with warm dining tents, communication facilities, and full expedition logistics. A traditional Puja ceremony marks the start of the climb, honoring the mountain and Sherpa spiritual traditions.
Camp I (≈6,200 m)
Reached after a challenging climb through crevassed glacier terrain and icy slopes. Camp I sits beneath the massive Southwest Face and offers the first real taste of Kangchenjunga’s technical nature. It is a key acclimatization camp before moving onto steeper ground.
Camp II (≈6,400–6,500 m)
Positioned on steep ice slopes, Camp II is exposed and demanding. Climbers ascend fixed lines on mixed snow and ice terrain, navigating seracs and hard blue ice. The air is noticeably thinner, and every step requires focus and efficient climbing technique.
Camp III (≈7,000–7,100 m)
Located high on the Southwest Face, Camp III involves sustained climbing on 40–50° ice. This is a true high-altitude environment, cold and isolated, where climbers finalize acclimatization. The views stretch across the remote valleys of eastern Nepal and into India and Sikkim.
Camp IV (≈7,400–7,500 m)
A high, harsh platform carved into the upper face, Camp IV is the final staging point for the summit push. Climbers rest here briefly on supplemental oxygen before moving toward the summit via steep, technical terrain.
Summit (8,586 m)
One of the most remote and respected summits on Earth. The final climb involves exposed ridges, mixed terrain, and long, sustained sections at extreme altitude. The summit of Kangchenjunga reveals unparalleled views of Makalu, Everest, Lhotse, and the vast eastern Himalayas — a quiet and powerful reward for one of the most challenging climbs in mountaineering.
