Rising to 6,189 meters (20,305 ft), Island Peak (Imja Tse) is one of Nepal’s most iconic and accessible Himalayan climbing experiences. It is the perfect objective for both first-time climbers and trekkers wishing to step confidently into the world of mountaineering in the Everest region.
First named Island Peak by the legendary Eric Shipton in 1953 because it stood like an island in a sea of ice, this beautiful summit sits in the heart of the Khumbu Himal. Surrounded by the towering faces of Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Makalu, and Everest itself, the landscape feels both dramatic and inspiring from the very first day of the journey.
Your adventure begins with a scenic mountain flight to Lukla followed by a classic trek through Sherpa villages rich in culture and Himalayan history. The route mirrors the Everest Base Camp trail as you pass through Namche Bazaar, Tengboche Monastery, and Dingboche before entering the quiet beauty of Chhukung Valley.
Acclimatization days are carefully planned to strengthen your body for the climb ahead. At Island Peak Base Camp (5,087 m), your Sherpa climbing guides provide essential training on rope techniques, glacier travel, and safety procedures, ensuring you approach summit day with confidence.
The ascent is exciting yet achievable for motivated trekkers. You will navigate glacial moraines, ascend fixed ropes, and climb gentle snow slopes that lead to a beautiful summit ridge. From the top, the reward is extraordinary 360° views. Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Ama Dablam rise around you in a breathtaking Himalayan panorama you will never forget.
With Royal Orchid Treks & Expedition, your climb is supported by highly experienced Sherpa mountaineers who prioritize safety, acclimatization, and personal guidance, making your first Himalayan summit both safe and unforgettable.
Route & Camp Highlights – Island Peak (Imja Tse) 6,189 m
Island Peak Base Camp – 5,087 m
Located on a broad glacial terrace below the southwest face of Island Peak, Base Camp becomes the heart of your climbing journey. The camp is fully equipped with private sleeping tents, a warm dining tent, kitchen services, and communication support. This is where climbers refine essential mountaineering skills including fixed rope handling, jumar technique, glacier travel, and crampon practice. The calm atmosphere and stunning mountain walls make it the perfect place to acclimatize and prepare for summit day.
Moraine and Glacier Approach – 5,300 to 5,700 m
Leaving Base Camp, the route climbs steadily over rocky moraines before stepping onto the Island Peak glacier. This section introduces you to classic Himalayan glacier movement with crevasse navigation, snow bridges, and occasionally ladders depending on seasonal conditions. The gradual ascent towards the upper glacier helps your body adjust while offering spectacular views of the surrounding peaks.
Snow Headwall and Fixed Rope Section – 5,700 to 6,100 m
The headwall is the most exciting part of the climb. Here, the slope increases to about 40 to 50 degrees, giving a true sense of high-altitude mountaineering. Climbers use jumars on fixed ropes while maintaining steady crampon and ice axe technique. Challenging yet very achievable, this section makes Island Peak one of the best training mountains for those dreaming of higher summits like Ama Dablam or even Everest.
Summit Ridge – 6,189 m
The final stretch is a narrow snow ridge leading directly to the summit. As you take your final steps, the Himalayas open up in a breathtaking panorama. Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Ama Dablam, Baruntse, and countless unnamed peaks rise around you in a 360 degree display. The summit ridge is secure, awe inspiring, and incredibly rewarding, giving you the pure joy of standing atop one of Nepal’s most iconic trekking peaks.
