Rising to 7,129 m (23,389 ft), Mt. Baruntse stands as one of Nepal’s most elegant and photogenic Himalayan peaks, perfectly positioned between Mount Everest and Mount Makalu in the Mahalangur Himal range. Enclosed by the pristine Hunku and Barun Glaciers, the mountain offers a rare sense of wilderness — far from the crowded trails of more commercial expeditions.
First summited in 1954 by a New Zealand team led by Sir Edmund Hillary, the Southeast Ridge Route remains the classic and most successful line to the summit. With ice slopes averaging 45°–50°, crevassed glacier sections, and a spectacular summit ridge, Baruntse is regarded as the ideal preparation climb for mountaineers aiming for future 8,000-meter goals such as Everest, Lhotse, or Makalu.
The Baruntse Expedition strikes the perfect balance of technical challenge, remote beauty, and strategic climbing. With Royal Orchid Treks & Expedition, you are guided
by highly experienced Sherpa climbers who combine decades of Himalayan expertise with modern safety systems and careful planning — ensuring a safe, smooth, and deeply rewarding ascent in the heart of Nepal’s high Himalaya

Route & Camp Highlights – Baruntse Expedition (7,129 m)
Base Camp – 5,400 m | Barun Glacier
Baruntse Base Camp is strategically positioned on the lower Barun Glacier, offering a wide and secure platform for the expedition. The campsite is fully equipped with individual sleeping tents, heated dining facilities, kitchen structures, and satellite communication systems, creating a comfortable command center for high-altitude operations. Your climb officially begins here with a traditional Puja ceremony, honoring the mountain and blessing the team for a safe and successful ascent—an essential part of Himalayan expedition culture.
Camp I – 6,000 m | Glacier Approach & Snow Ramps
Camp I is reached after a sustained ascent on moderate snow slopes and glacial terrain, ideal for acclimatization rotations and early load carries. This camp sits at the base of Baruntse’s upper glacier basin and provides panoramic views toward Makalu (8,485 m) and the remote Hunku Valley. This stage introduces climbers to crevasse navigation, fixed-line movement, and rope-team travel, key components of 7000m peak climbing.
Camp II – 6,400 m | Technical Ice Slopes & Summit Ridge Access
As the main high camp for the summit push, Camp II is established beneath the prominent southeast summit ridge. The ascent to this camp features the technical crux of the expedition, involving:
45°–50° ice slopes
Fixed ropes on steep sections
Mixed snow-ice climbing
Exposure to ridge cornices
Camp II offers direct access to the summit route and prepares climbers for the final high- altitude push.
Summit – 7,129 m | Baruntse Main Summit
The summit bid begins in the early morning hours, climbing steadily along protected fixed ropes and sustained snow faces. The route demands strong crampon technique, steady pacing, and precise movement on steep alpine terrain. Reaching the summit of Mount Baruntse rewards you with a spectacular 360° Himalayan panorama featuring:
Mount Everest (8,848.86 m)
Lhotse (8,516 m)
Makalu (8,485 m)
Ama Dablam (6,812 m)
The vast Mahalangur and Barun ranges
This is one of the most breathtaking summit views in the Himalayas—an unforgettable reward for a technically engaging 7,000m climb.
