Mera Peak (6,476 m) Nepal’s highest trekking peak is a true Himalayan gem that combines adventure, natural beauty, and cultural immersion. Located in the Mahalangur section of the Himalayas, just south of Mt. Everest, Mera offers one of the most panoramic Himalayan vistas from Everest and Lhotse in the north to Makalu, Cho Oyu, Kanchenjunga, and Ama Dablam across the horizon.
The journey begins with a short flight to Lukla, followed by a scenic trail across Zatrwa La Pass (4,610 m) into the remote Hinku Valley. This quieter, less-trodden route offers pristine forests, yak pastures, and authentic Sherpa villages the perfect environment for natural acclimatization and cultural connection.
First summited in 1953 by J.O.M. Roberts and Sen Tenzing, Mera Peak has since become one of the most popular Himalayan climbing goals for those taking their first step into mountaineering. The northern route is non-technical and accessible for beginners with basic training, making it ideal for trekkers seeking their first summit experience above 6,000 m.
During the spring and autumn seasons, clear skies, stable snow, and moderate temperatures ensure the best conditions for climbing. Whether you’re a seasoned adventurer or a first-time climber, Mera Peak offers an unforgettable balance of wilderness trekking, cultural encounters, and the thrill of standing atop Nepal’s highest trekking peak.
Located on a wide and sheltered glacial terrace below the Mera La Pass, Base Camp is your main preparation and acclimatization site. The camp is well established with spacious tent platforms, a dining tent, kitchen facilities, and communication support. Here, climbers receive essential training in rope systems, crampon technique, and glacier safety. The surrounding scenery includes Chamlang, Peak 43, and the ice domes of the Mera massif.
Mera High Camp 5,780 m
Set on a rocky ridge overlooking the spectacular Hinku Valley, High Camp is the strategic point from which the summit push begins. Although exposed, it is secure and offers breathtaking sunset and sunrise views over Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu. Climbers hydrate, rest, and prepare their gear for the early morning ascent.
Glacier Traverse 5,800 to 6,200 m
From High Camp, the route leads onto a broad and gently rising glacier. The northern approach involves steady snow walking, coordinated rope travel, and safe navigation across crevasse zones. This section is ideal for beginners experiencing real Himalayan glacier travel for the first time.
Summit Dome 6,300 to 6,476 m
The final ascent is a gradual snow dome leading to the central summit of Mera Peak. Although non technical, this section is physically demanding due to the high altitude. As climbers reach the summit ridge, one of the finest panoramas in the Himalayas unfolds Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Kanchenjunga, Ama Dablam, Baruntse, and Chamlang stretch across the skyline in unforgettable 360 degree clarity.
